Abstract

Little information exists on breeding of the Yellow-crowned Night-heron (Nyctanassa violacea). In Mexico, the Yellow-crowned Night-heron is a resident species distributed on both slopes, with a few records of individuals in the interior of the country. From March to June 2025, we conducted 10 birdwatching visits to La Aurora Ecological Park in Saltillo, Coahuila, supplemented by citizen science records. We recorded two nests and between 2 and 5 individuals of the Yellow-crowned Night-heron in Smooth-pecan (Carya illinoinensis) hickories. Our records were integrated with 47 additional citizen science (eBird and iNaturalistMX) records that confirmed the presence of the species outside its known range in northeastern Mexico. This report represents an opportunity to expand our knowledge of the distribution, movements, and breeding of this species.
