Color alterations in plumage of Strigidae: a new record for the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) in Ecuador

Abstract

There are few reports of pigment abnormality for the Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus), and all come from North America or Europe. We documented on 6 May 2023, in northern Ecuador, a Short-eared Owl with pigmentary abnormality that coincided with pastel dilution. The individual exhibited a predominantly beige appearance with a faded facial pattern, but retained the typical yellow iris color and black bill. Additionally, it was observed foraging alongside a conspecific of normal coloration without being excluded. We reviewed 14 previous publications, and found reports of pigmentary abnormalities in at least 43 individuals of 16 owl species, where progressive graying was the most common abnormality, but only 11 records had photographs. Our record represents the first case of chromatic aberration in an owl in Ecuador, and the first with photographic evidence of a Short-eared Owl with pastel dilution throughout its distribution.
