First record of the Five-striped Sparrow (Amphispizopsis quinquestriata) for the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve and range extension proposal

Abstract

The Five-striped Sparrow (Amphispizopsis quinquestriata) inhabits areas of xerophilous scrub generally above 500 m and has its most southernly distribution in the mountainous area of northern Jalisco, with a few records that are considered accidental along the Pacific coast. We conducted ornithological surveys in the area around the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve in Jalisco, Mexico. On 20 November 2020, we registered a Five-striped Sparrow at an altitude of 26 masl along Cajones Creek that has a fringe of semi-deciduous forest surrounded by dry deciduous forest. We also searched for historical records in ornithological databases (such as eBird). We found 17 historical records for the state of Jalisco, eight of which occurred outside the current distribution. This is the first record of the species for the reserve, which may be due to the discrete nature of the species, or a change in site conditions due to climate change that makes it more attractive to the species. Together these records represent a southernly extension of the species distribution, and a change in altitudinal range as several records are below the known altitudinal limit.
