Abstract

The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) may be susceptible to wildfires, but there are no studies in Mexico that evaluate the influence on nesting persistence and success. We examined before and after a wildfire in April-May 2023, the permanence of a Golden Eagle pair, their nesting success and reproductive output in Cañón El Espía in Los Altos Norte of Jalisco. There was no abandonment of the affected nesting territory, nor were there any apparent injuries to the breeding pair. Although one of the three nests was burned, it was not in use at the time, and the pair successfully produced 2 fledglings a year after the wildfire. We estimated a 50% apparent nesting success with a reproductive output of 0.75 fledglings/nest over five seasons in the territory. The pair showed some resilience to burning of the territory a year after the wildfire, but it is possible that effects will occur in subsequent years
