First record of the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in Coahuila, Mexico

We report the first reproductive colony of Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in the municipality of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico. We saw individuals at first time in February 2013 and additional observations in June 2016, showing a significant increase of that population by the extension if its distribution in new areas inside of Universidad Autonoma Agraria Antonio Narro, campus Laguna. The colony was found on a yucca plants (Yucca elata), with at least 8 visible active entrances at 4 meters above ground level. During 2013 we observed 12 individuals on that site, nine adults and three juveniles, whereas during 2016 we detected 25 parrots. Even when there is a national strategy on invasive exotic species in Mexico in order to prevent, control and eradication, in city of Torreon there is not action to control this species. The urban area where the population of parrots is present, it contains proper characteristics and conditions of the structure and composition of the vegetation according to literature for further establishment and population growth.
